Hello, I am Yezmin Thomas!

Yezmin Thomas about

I am a journalist by trade; blogger, podcast host, and content creator by choice. Some people know me for my work in television news, but few know what my life really looks like behind the scenes.

I am an overwhelmed working mom who dreams about keeping the house perfectly organized and the laundry basket empty. I love to read, practice yoga, and spoil my two dogs, Hershey and Joey. But what I am most passionate about is learning and teaching others about personal finances.

Why this blog?

I became very interested in the topic of managing my money when I finally realized- in my 30’s- that I had no idea of how to live on a budget, invest in my 401K, or stay out of debt. Since then, I have made changes to take control of my money and pursue financial freedom.

For starters, I quit using credit cards and borrowing money. If I want to buy something, no matter how much it cost, I have to be able to buy it outright. As a result, aside from my mortgage I don’t have any other debt.

I have experienced the benefits of pursuing a debt free lifestyle and want to share that with all my readers! Life is less complicated when you don’t have dozens of bills to pay. But please, don’t get me wrong. It is not easy trying to live debt free. But the sacrifice is worth every penny saved!

The Blog & Podcast

Yezmin Thomas editing “One Take” podcast.

I started this blog and my podcast “One Take” in 2016, as a space to explore writing and express my thoughts. My intention was to seek and share wisdom to live a more simple, healthy, and happy lifestyle.

I was feeling very burned out and needed a place to let my mind escape! My life had gotten too complicated.  Although I was getting a lot done, I lacked a sense of fulfillment. In big part, I felt that way because I was rushing the kids everyday to school and other activities, and spending little quality time with the family. In addition, my commute to work was long and stressful.

It became like a mission impossible trying to keep up with the needs of my family and the responsibilities of my work without losing my mind! To make matters worse, I had started to lose passion for my job. Instead of excitement about covering the news, I was feeling very depressed.

Working in News

As a television journalist I covered a lot of stories. Some of them were fun but most of them were tragic. On any given day I could cover anything from scams and deadly shootings, to tornado damage or presidential visits. But as you may notice from watching any newscast, most of what is shown on the news is bad news.

I reached my breaking point after a 15 year run in the news industry. It was the evening of July 7, 2016. I had put the kids in bed and was ready to go to sleep when I received a call to report back to work. There had been a shooting in downtown Dallas, Texas. At the time I got that call we knew little about the shooting. Later we would learn that five police officers had been massacred while working at a protest.

My responsibility as a journalist was to cover the tragic news, but in my heart I knew that I couldn’t do that job for much longer. I had covered countless accidents, fires, and shootings. But what happened that night in Dallas was unlike anything I could have ever imagined or be prepared to do.

I prayed to God that my producers would not assign me to find the relatives of the fallen officers, and He listened. That day I knew it was time to move on, I could not do my job as a hard news journalist with excellence any more.

Moving on

In 2017, I left my television job. There was no doubt in my mind that covering bad news was wearing me away. I wanted to use my gifts and talents to help people, but I needed to come up with a new way of doing that.

A light bulb went off in my head when viewers continued to reach out to me, asking for help because they had been ripped off. Many of them were fans of a consumer rights/investigative reporting segment that I anchored for a few years on KXTX Telemundo 39.

Through my reporting I uncovered many cases of fraud. And as a result of my work several criminal investigations were opened and a few people went to jail. It is pretty fair to say that I cannot stand to see people being taken advantage of.

Finding a New Purpose

My purpose and personal mission with this platform is to create content that can inform, inspire, and empower people to live better. I believe that access to the right information can enable individuals to take control of their situations and make the right decisions.

A lot of the stories that I reported on had to do with people falling victim to scams. I learned that even if I had good intentions to help anyone who shared their story with me, I could not do everyone a service. As a result, I created this platform to encourage people to be proactive, to be informed, and make better decisions.

To be in control of our lives we need to get rid of the “victim” mindset. We can not go on blaming others for our problems. If we want to live life to the fullest, we must take responsibility of our actions. It is on every single one of us to forge our own future.

Topics that I Will Cover

Blogging topics Yezmin Thomas

They say that the definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. Through this platform, I will challenge people to think differently, to be open to new ways of doing things, and to see the world through a different lens.

My intention is to lead by example by sharing my journey to a debt free lifestyle. I hope to motivate others to learn to take control of their money and personal finances. I truly believe that unless you are in control, you cannot own your destiny. Debt limits your options, but living debt free and having the ability to choose how to spend your money will open opportunities. As a result, we can have the ability to create a better future for our families.

At www.yezminthomas.com you will find practical information about saving money, getting out of debt, and spending smart. I will also continue providing exclusive special coverage of the criminal investigation and trial against the company Mito Financial and its owner Juan Miguel Lopez.

Besides talking about money, I will also dig deep into the area of personal growth, especially through my podcast.

One Take is a raw, thought provoking podcast, that seeks to inspire listeners to become the best version of themselves and to simplify their lives.

The episodes are unscripted and revolve around topics that can help and inspire the listeners to take action to live better. For instance, I will share success stories through interviews with entrepreneurs, experts in different topics, and ordinary people doing extraordinary things. I will also have some solo episodes to share my message of hope and empowerment with the listeners.
